When the Moon Comes Out to Play

Ever try to sleep on a night with a full moon shining into a room with really thin curtains? Add to that a lover who, for whatever reason, is far away, and you've probably got a bad case of insomnia. I became fascinated with the moon when I was writing a Master's thesis on Shakespeare's A Midsummer's Night Dream. "The moon, methinks, looks with a watery eye/And when she weeps, weeps every little flower/Lamenting some enforced chastity". Lonely lovers have had trouble with moonlight for quite some time.

On this cut, I use the Maybell in G tuning. Sean does that great "heartbeat" bass line at the beginning that I love so much and then finishes the piece off with bowing. I was really tickled with Chris Ball's keyboard work on this cut. It was a one-taker, if I remember rightly, and he managed to cop the sort of spooky Steve Winwood organ on John Barleycorn Must Die. Haunted organ for the haunted organs!
